“Since first meeting at Berklee College of Music in 2013, Magdalena Abrego and Allison Burik have cultivated their sound as a duo in a project titled Umbrella Pine. By utilizing a combination of alto saxophone, bass clarinet, electric guitar, and electronics, the two seek to explore possibilities within improvisation. The project features original compositions as well as arrangements of music by Eric Dolphy, Albert Ayler, and others.”
“Ocelot exemplifies the emergent wave of musicians that work within the intersections of musical practices and traditions including jazz, western classical, free improvised and noise music. Their work sits at these musical junctures, creating an opportunity for people to see the beauty in an ever so diversifying world.
Capitalizing on the flexibility of a smaller ensemble, Ocelot often performs compositions that intentionally leave space for improvisation to shape the music. The unpredictability of the music creates excitement and dynamism that is otherwise difficult to achieve organically. This is juxtaposed against meticulously composed sections that provide moments of synchrony and harmony.”
